The Education Welfare Act 2000

THE EDUCATION WELFARE ACT 2000

Under the Act a parent is obliged to send his/her child to a recognised school.  The Parent is obliged to inform the child’s teacher who in turn informs the Principal of the reason for any absence during the school year.  We ask you to put the reason in writing, as if a child exceeds 19 absences in the school year the school is obliged to inform Tusla of this.

The Act is there to ensure children are able to avail of the education to which they are entitled.  It sets out to help families who have ongoing problems re. school attendance and hopes to tackle comprehensively the problems of absenteeism and early school leaving.  Children who have genuine reasons for non-attendance (e.g illness) are not the priority of  Tusla.
